EU's €90 Billion Loan for Ukraine Faces Hurdles as Hungary Blocks Deal
EU Loan Package for Ukraine Stalled
According to Главком: The European Union is working to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan, but the decision has not yet been approved due to obstacles, including a block by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This move has drawn criticism from other EU leaders, as the stalled loan could impact Ukraine's preparations for the 2026-2027 winter season. This financial aid is crucial for Ukraine's long-term stability as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.
Financial Support and Political Obstacles
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that work is ongoing to overcome hurdles related to the 20th sanctions package and the loan disbursement.
"We have some obstacles on the way to the 20th sanctions package, as well as the loan payment. Work on overcoming them continues, but unfortunately, I cannot bring good news today. We are still working and hope to get this decision at the next European Council,"
Kallas noted.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the EU will provide financial support to Ukraine in any case. Despite blocking the loan, Hungary, along with Slovakia and the Czech Republic, has assured that it will not obstruct other EU member states' decisions regarding the credit. However, five EU diplomats and a minister from one of the bloc's countries have stated there could be consequences for Hungary after its elections.
This situation highlights the complexities of EU internal politics, where a single member's decision can significantly impact collective aid to Ukraine. In the context of war and the economic challenges Ukraine faces, delays in financial support could adversely affect its winter preparedness. The EU's next steps in this matter could be decisive for the future development of Ukraine-EU relations and for regional stability overall. The standoff underscores the tension between national veto powers and the bloc's collective foreign policy goals.
As the EU grapples with internal disagreements, the implications of the stalled financial aid extend beyond immediate concerns. The delayed assistance package for Ukraine is intertwined with new sanctions against Russia, which could further complicate the geopolitical landscape and impact Ukraine's resilience this winter.
