Disruptions in undersea communication cables in the Baltic region
According to Главком: Estonia has reported disruptions in the operation of undersea communication cables in the Baltic region. The Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs of the country has recorded damage to four cables connecting Estonia with other countries, as well as one cable connecting the island of Hiiumaa with the mainland of Estonia.
Since December 28 of this year, malfunctions have been detected on the cable between Estonia and Sweden, which belongs to CITIC. Problems have also been recorded on the Telia cable connecting the Läänemaa municipality with the island of Hiiumaa. Since December 30, damage has been reported on the Arelion cable between Hiiumaa and Sweden at two locations. As of December 31, it has become known about damage to two more cables between Estonia and Finland: one belongs to Arelion, and the other to Elisa.
New cable laying projects
In connection with these issues, Sweden, Estonia, and Finland have begun laying new telecommunications cables on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The company GlobalConnect has announced the start of a project that involves laying four new undersea telecommunications cables in this region.
The damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea raises serious concerns about the stability of communication between the countries in the region. The new cable laying projects aim to ensure a more reliable infrastructure for telecommunications, which is an important step in the context of growing demands for digital communications and the security of information networks. Cooperation between Estonia, Sweden, and Finland in this area demonstrates the countries' commitment to strengthening their digital infrastructure and reducing the risks associated with potential communication failures.
