According to УНІАН — Туризм: On July 5, Sicily's Mount Etna erupted, sending a massive plume of ash into the sky and forcing a temporary halt to incoming flights at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport. The eruption began around 7:45 a.m. local time and intensified over the next hour. The ash cloud climbed roughly 1.5 kilometers above the volcano's summit, with winds carrying it southward.

Impact on Air Travel

The eruption caused Catania-Fontanarossa Airport to suspend flight arrivals temporarily. ITA Airways announced that 'both departing and arriving flights are subject to cancellations and rescheduling.' Airspace sector B2 remained closed until 7:00 p.m. local time, and arrivals were capped at just five per hour until 9:00 p.m. No restrictions were placed on departures, but 23 flights were diverted to Palermo Airport instead.

Notably, the lava flow that had been active since June 26 ceased on July 4. Mount Etna stands approximately 3,350 meters above sea level, and its last eruption occurred on January 1 of this year. As one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, Etna's eruptions consistently draw significant attention.
