The eruption began around 7:45 a.m. local time and intensified over the next hour. The ash cloud climbed roughly 1.5 kilometers above the volcano's summit, with winds carrying it southward.

The eruption caused Catania-Fontanarossa Airport to suspend flight arrivals temporarily. ITA Airways announced that 'both departing and arriving flights are subject to cancellations and rescheduling.' Airspace sector B2 remained closed until 7:00 p.m. local time, and arrivals were capped at just five per hour until 9:00 p.m. No restrictions were placed on departures, but 23 flights were diverted to Palermo Airport instead.
