In 2025, the European Union will allocate 28.3 billion euros to Ukraine for military needs
The EU continues to support Ukraine
According to Главком: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, after a conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky, announced new assistance to Ukraine and touched on issues of Euro-integration. According to her, in 2025, Kyiv will receive a loan of 28.3 billion euros, intended to cover military needs. This funding will be a significant contribution to strengthening the country's defense capabilities.
The telephone conversation between Zelensky and von der Leyen took place on May 27. The main topic was the enhancement of Ukraine's air defense. During the conversation, the head of the European Commission emphasized:
“In my conversation with President Zelensky, I reaffirmed Europe's full support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's increasing brutal aggression. Europe's key defense priorities are air defense, means to combat drones, and their neutralization. Ukraine will be fully involved in these efforts.” - Ursula von der Leyen
The movement towards EU membership
Additionally, Zelensky held talks with the President of the European Council, António Costa. The parties discussed Ukraine's progress on the path to the European Union. As noted by the Ukrainian leader, the country hopes to open all six negotiation clusters in the coming months. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga added that previously the main obstacle to joining was the position of the Hungarian government led by Viktor Orbán. However, after the parliamentary elections and the change of power in Hungary, the barrier has been lifted.
Thus, EU assistance and political changes in Hungary have the potential to accelerate Ukraine's Euro-integration. Increasing Russian aggression and the tense international situation make cooperation with the EU particularly important, and strengthening defense is critically necessary. The opening of negotiation clusters will be a significant step towards meeting membership conditions, which will entail serious economic and political consequences for Ukraine.
In the context of the ongoing support for Ukraine from the EU, it is important to note that President Zelensky also expressed his position against the model of associated membership without voting rights. This statement underscores Ukraine's commitment to full participation in European institutions and the importance of political dialogue with the European Union against the backdrop of growing threats from Russia.
