No More Foreign Athletes

According to Главком: The head of the Biathlon Federation of Ukraine, Ivan Krulko, has announced a definitive halt to bringing in foreign talent-specifically Russian and Belarusian coaches and athletes-despite receiving offers to do so. The Federation is now focusing entirely on developing homegrown youth, stressing the importance of self-reliance and building a team composed solely of Ukrainian competitors.

'We have taken a clear line for ourselves-there will be no foreign athletes. We rely on our own strengths, we train our own young people, and we move forward on this path. I support this idea-we must raise Ukrainians. But that means we need to be patient and do this painstaking, very difficult work.' Ivan Krulko

Krulko also revealed that the Federation has lost at least four athletes, including Kateryna Bekh, who previously competed for Ukraine but returned to Russia after the full-scale war began. 'We have already lost at least four top-class, highly promising athletes. Kateryna Bekh is one example,' he added. With Russia and Belarus excluded from international competitions, Ukraine’s biathlon team now has only four or five athletes capable of competing in World Cup events.

Long-Term Development Strategy

Krulko emphasized that it takes approximately ten years to train a beginner into a professional athlete. 'In the short term, bringing in foreign athletes might bring results, and people might even applaud us. But afterward, we’d be left with a burned field-no prospects, no rising youth. That’s why I say we need ten years to prepare a beginner for the professional level,' he explained.

Recently, the Biathlon Federation of Ukraine announced the hiring of Finnish specialist Ville Juhani Maunuksela, who will join the coaching staff of the women’s national biathlon team. This move underscores the Federation’s commitment to actively developing Ukrainian athletes and placing high hopes on them for future competitions.

By turning away from foreign athletes, the Biathlon Federation of Ukraine is demonstrating its determination to build a strong, independent team of Ukrainian competitors. This decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at nurturing young talent and securing the future of biathlon in the country. Amid losses of athletes due to the war and exclusion from international events, the Federation is working to preserve its talent pool and concentrate on long-term growth. The addition of new coaches is also expected to improve training processes and boost Ukrainian athletes’ performance in the years ahead.

As Ukraine's Biathlon Federation reinforces its commitment to nurturing local talent, it stands in stark contrast to the ongoing discussions surrounding the return of Russian athletes to international sports. This situation raises critical questions about the integrity and future of competitive athletics.
