Flamingos Spotted in Odesa's Estuaries

According to Главком: Flamingos have been observed in the estuaries of the Odesa region as part of a natural expansion of their habitat. Viktor Demchenko, deputy director of the Institute of Marine Biology at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, emphasized that these birds are not fully classified as an invasive species. The flamingos now appearing in Ukraine first began breeding a decade ago in the area between Crimea and the Kherson region, specifically on the Syvash and other salt lakes.

Over the past 30 years, flamingos have periodically visited Ukrainian territory. However, in April 2026, a flock of pink flamingos arrived at the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park in the Odesa region, choosing to stop in a zone known as Tuzly Amazonia. This area has become a key observation point for the birds.

Flamingo Numbers and Their Ecological Role

Viktor Demchenko noted that

the first attempts at flamingo breeding in Ukraine were recorded about ten years ago.

He added that

the high population density of this species in one area later encouraged its spread to other water bodies, meaning they needed to find new locations.

According to him, labeling flamingos as invasive is inaccurate because 'neither pelicans nor flamingos can be called typical invasive species,' given that pelicans have lived in Ukraine for at least 50 years.

Invasive species are defined as non-native plants, animals, or fungi that move beyond their natural range into new ecosystems. They can reproduce aggressively and pose a threat to local flora, fauna, the economy, or human health. In the case of flamingos in the Odesa region, their range expansion does not pose a threat but rather signals changes in the natural environment.

The growing number of flamingos in Ukraine may indicate positive shifts in the region's ecological condition, as well as opportunities for developing tourism routes centered on birdwatching. Observing these flamingos could become a key component of eco-tourism in the Odesa region, thereby raising public awareness about environmental conservation.
