Croatia Reinstates Mandatory Military Service

According to Главком: After a 17-year hiatus, Croatia is bringing back compulsory military service. The country's parliament approved the law in October 2025, with 84 votes in favor, 11 against, and 30 abstentions. The government plans to conscript around 4,000 people annually, with the first group of 800 recruits beginning a two-month basic military training program soon. This move reflects a significant shift in the nation's security posture, influenced by regional instability and a desire to bolster its armed forces.

Recruits who complete their service will receive a monthly payment of approximately 1,100 euros, and their service time will count toward their work history. Notably, over half of the participants in this initial group volunteered, and about 10% of the recruits are women. During their training, conscripts will learn essential skills including:

  • Survival techniques
  • Self-defense
  • First aid
  • Operating FPV drones

A Shift in National Security Strategy

The reinstatement of mandatory service signals a clear change in Croatia's approach to national defense and security. This decision is likely driven by a heightened security climate in the region and the country's aim to strengthen its army and ensure greater preparedness for potential threats. Beyond military training, the financial support offered to conscripts is seen as a key incentive to encourage youth participation in the program. The reintroduction of conscription places Croatia alongside other European nations reassessing their defense models in a changing geopolitical landscape.
