Kyiv to Close Overpass Near Chernihivska Metro Station: Key Changes Drivers Must Know
Traffic Shutdown at Chernihivska Metro
According to Главком: Starting April 25, 2023, and running through November 30, 2023, Kyiv will fully close the overpass near Chernihivska Metro station to both vehicles and pedestrians. This restriction applies to all forms of transport, including trams and buses. The closure affects the interchange at the intersection of Myropilska Street and Brovarskyi Avenue, a move that has drawn criticism from the public organization "Passengers of Kyiv" due to concerns over inefficiency and repair costs.
Discontinued Routes and Alternative Options
Tram lines No. 4, 5, 27, 28, 32, and 35, along with bus routes No. 59 and 2-TR, have been suspended. To maintain passenger service, alternative routes have been established, deploying 39 buses capable of carrying at most two-thirds of the tram passenger volume. The project design cost is 15 million UAH, while reconfiguring the embankments at the exits will require 200–300 million UAH.
Preparatory work is currently underway at the site. Specialists from the HC Avtostrada group and their subcontractors are focusing on:
- relocating utility networks,
- widening the interchange chords,
- and constructing new on-ramps and off-ramps.
Reinforcement cages for piles, produced at Avtostrada’s own factory, have begun arriving at the construction site. As noted by Vyacheslav Skryl, co-founder of "Passengers of Kyiv,"
“the Chernihivska Metro junction requires a complete rethinking.”
Skryl also remarked that
“the current project only makes things worse,”
suggesting instead replacing the emergency spans on the overpass and repairing the supports for 200–300 million UAH.
Repair Work on Highway M-06
Separately, in the Kyiv region, repair work continues on the M-06 Kyiv-Chop highway near the village of Kalynivka in Bucha District. Traffic lanes on the M-06 are being closed in stages in both directions, with completion expected by early August 2026.
The overpass closure near Chernihivska Metro is part of a broader project to overhaul key transport arteries in the capital, aiming to improve infrastructure and road safety. However, criticism from civic organizations highlights potential flaws in the planning and execution of such projects, which could create additional challenges for passengers and city residents. The ongoing repairs on the M-06 highway further underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to modernizing Ukraine’s transport infrastructure, a process that will require significant time and financial resources.
As traffic disruptions continue to impact the city, it is essential for drivers to stay informed about the latest changes. In addition to the overpass closure near Chernihivska Metro station, Kyiv is implementing restrictions on two major avenues, which could further complicate travel plans for residents and visitors alike. Staying updated on these developments will help ensure smoother navigation through the city during this period of construction.
