Russia's Disinformation Campaign Over an Alleged Bus Strike

According to Главком: Moscow is spreading false claims that a Ukrainian drone struck a passenger bus in the Bryansk region. According to Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), this is a deliberate attempt by the Kremlin to pull Belarus into the ongoing war. Andriy Kovalenko, head of the CCD, stated this to the Ukrainian outlet Glavcom. Russian authorities allege that a drone hit a bus traveling on the Minsk-Anapa route at the Krasny Kamen border checkpoint in Bryansk. Russian media outlets have reported two injuries from this incident.

The only so-called evidence presented by Russia is a dubious audio recording. No photos or videos from the scene have been released. This follows a pattern: Russian propaganda previously circulated false reports about an attack on a bus carrying children that had no license plates, raising further doubts about the credibility of these new accusations.

Potential Repercussions for Belarus

Andriy Kovalenko pointed out that Vladimir Putin is pressuring Belarus to join the war against Ukraine, but several factors complicate this goal:

  • Alexander Lukashenko seeks to maintain a balanced relationship with both China and the United States.
  • The vast majority of Belarusian society opposes participation in the war.
  • Minsk is fully aware of the severe consequences of direct military involvement.

Kovalenko also noted that a faction of the Russian elite does not back Putin's strategy of prolonging the war, although hawks pushing for continued conflict still hold greater influence. He described the Kremlin's actions as

“cheap provocations, in the style of Russia’s talentless actors in uniform”

.

Putin is exploring scenarios to widen the conflict, but his plans are currently hampered by both internal and international constraints.

This situation underscores Russia's strategy of using disinformation and manipulation to stoke regional tensions. By fabricating news, the Kremlin likely aims to weaken Ukraine's position and pressure Belarus into a more active role in the war. However, resistance within Belarusian society and the broader geopolitical landscape may limit Russia's ability to execute these schemes.

As the Kremlin intensifies its efforts to manipulate public perception, the consequences of the war are becoming increasingly tangible for ordinary Russians. This shift in sentiment could undermine Putin's strongman image, as citizens begin to recognize the true cost of prolonged conflict.
