Robert Abela Begins His Third Term in Office

According to Главком: Robert Abela has taken the oath of office as Malta’s prime minister for the third time. The ceremony was held in Valletta, where President Myriam Spiteri Debono administered the oath. Abela first succeeded Joseph Muscat in 2020 and now serves as the country’s 14th prime minister. His government was re-elected in 2022 and, following the latest election on Saturday, has secured another term in power. This marks a significant milestone, as Abela is the first Labour Party prime minister since Dom Mintoff in 1981 to be sworn in for a third time.

Election Results

Abela’s Labour Party achieved a fourth consecutive electoral victory, capturing 51.8% of the vote. The Nationalist Party received 44.7%. Labour’s winning margin narrowed to 21,721 votes, down from 39,474 in 2022. The reduced lead suggests shifting voter dynamics, even as the party maintains its hold on government.

Abela was joined at the ceremony by his wife Lydia and daughter Georgia Mae, underscoring the personal significance of the occasion for the prime minister’s family. This stage in Abela’s political career reflects sustained voter support and the continuation of Labour Party policies in Malta.

Abela’s re-election points to ongoing political stability in the country, despite a decrease in the Labour Party’s support compared to previous elections. This could indicate that Abela and his administration will focus on addressing key issues that matter to voters, such as economic development and social reforms. The party will likely seek to strengthen its position, given the reduced advantage over the opposition.
