Ban on the transportation of dual-use goods in Lithuania

According to Главком: The Lithuanian government has extended for a year the ban on the transportation of certain dual-use goods through the territory of the country that may end up in Russia and Belarus. The temporary ban is in effect until January 2, 2027. This decision is a continuation of measures aimed at ensuring compliance with international sanctions.

In June 2023, the Lithuanian government imposed a ban on the transit of 57 groups of dual-use goods, including products that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. In November 2023, this list was expanded, indicating an increase in export control and security measures.

'By continuing export control measures, we aim to ensure effective implementation of international sanctions and reduce the risk of their circumvention,' said Paulijus Petrauskas.

Among the goods that fall under the ban are:

  • products with microelectronic and semiconductor components;
  • mechanical devices;
  • optical and semiconductor carriers;
  • lithium cells and batteries;
  • vehicles for transporting goods;
  • barometers.

These restrictions are part of Lithuania's overall strategy to support international security and stability in the region.

Lithuania's position in the context of international politics

The continuation of the ban on the transportation of dual-use goods underscores Lithuania's position in the context of international politics and security. Given the tension in relations with Russia and Belarus, such measures may be critical to ensure stability in the region and uphold the sanctions imposed against these countries. Lithuania, as a member of the European Union and NATO, continues to operate within the framework of a common security policy that may influence the further actions of other states in this area.
