Ukrainian singer Maria Burmaka shared archival photographs from the first 'Chervona Ruta' festival, which took place in Chernivtsi on September 17, 1989. This was reported by 'Glavcom' citing Maria Burmaka.
The 'Chervona Ruta' festival was significant for the development of Ukrainian culture and the struggle for independence. It was the first major music event in the USSR that was not controlled by the communist authorities.
Among the participants of the first festival were well-known performers who sang in Ukrainian, which was a significant challenge at that time. In 2024, the 35th anniversary of this festival will be celebrated, and a solemn event will take place in Lviv.
“The festival was held under the auspices of the Komsomol, but even the authorities at the time did not foresee what consequences it would have,” said Maria Burmaka, a participant and laureate of the first 'Chervona Ruta.'
Maria Burmaka emphasizes that the author's song has always been a symbol of protest, and in Ukraine, it had a distinctly anti-Soviet sentiment. Even the name of the festival 'Chervona Ruta' indicated its anti-Soviet orientation, which was felt even in the choice of its name.
