Finance Minister Yaresko threatens to resign

Ukraine's Finance Minister Natalia Yaresko threatened to resign if the government coalition does not continue the major overhaul of the country's economy, devastated by the conflict in the east, and if the growing support for populist parties continues to undermine the economic growth that could have been achieved.

It should be noted that the authorities' failure to finalize the 2016 budget has questioned the next tranche of the $17 billion bailout loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Yaresko believes that Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk will support the economic restructuring program.

'I came to do the job, and if I can't do it, then I have no interest in remaining in office, - said the finance minister. - If I felt that I was not supported by the president or the prime minister and their parties in the Rada, I would reconsider what I am doing'.

Yaresko, an American-born Ukrainian investment banker, took her position in December last year. She has been a driving force in the reconstruction of the Ukrainian economy. Experts note that if Natalia Yaresko resigns, it will send a signal to the IMF and other creditors, including from the US, the World Bank, and Europe.

'Minister Yaresko has been heroic in her efforts to assist Ukraine's economy, - believes Douglas Rediker, a visiting scholar at the Institute for International Economics and former IMF representative in the US. - She has taken on all the challenges that were extremely difficult and succeeded where others would have failed'.

Although the military conflict with pro-Russian militants in eastern Ukraine has pushed the country into a deep recession, economic recovery is starting to bear fruit. The Ukrainian currency has stabilized, and foreign exchange reserves are growing. But political tensions in Kyiv are also rising, raising concerns about the coalition government's ability to fulfill its promises.
