Germany Charges Ukrainian Man with Mail Bomb Plot for Russian Intelligence
German Prosecutors Charge Yevhen B.
According to Главком: German federal prosecutors have formally charged a Ukrainian citizen, Yevhen B., with preparing acts of sabotage using postal packages. According to the investigation, the accused acted on orders from Russian intelligence, relayed through intermediaries in Mariupol. Yevhen B. was initially apprehended in Switzerland in May and subsequently extradited to Germany in December.
Prosecutors allege that in late March 2025, Yevhen B., along with accomplices Danylo B. and Vladyslav T., mailed two packages containing activated GPS trackers from Cologne to Ukraine. The suspects' goal was to trace the delivery route and gather intelligence on the postal service. The charges state that the packages could have been designed to explode either within Germany or during transit to Ukraine. The investigation further notes that Yevhen B. coordinated the operation, recruited the two other suspects, procured the necessary equipment, and maintained contact with representatives of Russian intelligence services. This case highlights the ongoing threat of Russian-sponsored sabotage operations on European soil.
Growing Security Threats Across Europe
Normunds Mežviets, the head of Latvia's State Security Service, has reported attempts by Russian intelligence services to recruit individuals with criminal backgrounds to carry out acts of sabotage within the country. Potential targets for such attacks are believed to include:
- military facilities
- energy and other critical infrastructure
Last year, Latvian law enforcement uncovered a group involved in the arson of a defense-related enterprise and which was planning attacks on other facilities.
This case underscores the escalating threats posed by Russian intelligence activities in Europe, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. The recruitment of individuals with criminal pasts to conduct sabotage points to evolving tactics aimed at destabilizing the region. The response from law enforcement agencies, which are taking active measures to counter such threats, also indicates a heightened state of readiness to address potential security risks.
