Russian 'Traditional Values' Course Imposed on First-Graders in Occupied Luhansk Schools
New Subject Introduced in Luhansk Schools
According to Главком: A new mandatory subject titled 'Traditional Russian Spiritual and Moral Values' is being introduced for first-grade students in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine's Luhansk region, starting this academic year. Special textbooks aimed at integrating this course into the curriculum will soon be distributed to schools. This move is part of a broader pattern of using education as a tool of influence in occupied areas, a tactic condemned by Western governments and human rights organizations.
Militarization of Higher Education in Russia
Separately, Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service has reported on a large-scale and coercive militarization campaign within Russian higher education. Russia's Ministry of Defense is actively recruiting students for the war in Ukraine, targeting at least 16 universities in St. Petersburg and dozens of regional colleges. Students who agree to military service are being offered financial incentives of up to 5.5 million rubles per year.
The Russian Defense Ministry has also prepared and sent an official manual to universities for agitating students to join unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) system units.
Oleksiy Kharchenko: 'The occupiers continue to mock the school curriculum in the captured territories.'
These actions have drawn concern and criticism from the international community, as they signal a continued policy of militarization and ideological influence over the younger generation in regions under Russian control.
The introduction of the 'Traditional Russian Spiritual and Moral Values' course is a component of Russia's strategy to strengthen its influence over youth in occupied territories. It indicates an intent to use the education system to foster loyalty to Russian ideals and values. Consequently, the international community continues to monitor the situation and expresses alarm over the militarization of education, which could have long-term consequences for future generations. Thus, these events reflect not only ongoing military actions but also the use of education as an instrument for shaping the consciousness of the young.
In addition to the introduction of the 'Traditional Russian Spiritual and Moral Values' course, there are growing concerns regarding the military's influence on youth education. Recent reports highlight disturbing instances of student recruitment drives by the Russian military, including a notable incident involving a drone demonstration that ended in chaos. Such events further illustrate the extent of militarization within educational institutions. For more details on this alarming trend, see the coverage of the military's recruitment efforts.
