2026 Winter Olympics Underway: Early Training Results for Ukraine's Athletes

According to Главком: The first official competitions and training sessions for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy commenced on February 4, 2026. Representing Ukraine in these early events were alpine skier Dmytro Shepchuk and lugers Andrii Mandzii and Anton Dukach. It is worth noting that Ukraine is not represented in the curling competitions at these Games.

Training Session Outcomes for Ukrainian Competitors

The first Ukrainian to participate in training was 20-year-old alpine skier Dmytro Shepchuk, an Olympic debutant. In his discipline, the downhill, Dmytro finished his training run in 40th place, trailing the session leader by 13.15 seconds. During the training, five athletes failed to complete the descent, with Norwegian skier Fredrik Møller suffering a serious fall and being evacuated by helicopter. The winner of the first downhill training was American Ryan Cochran-Siegle, a two-time World Cup podium finisher in downhill this season and the 2018 Olympic silver medalist in super-G.

In luge training, Ukrainians Andrii Mandzii and Anton Dukach took part. In the first run, Anton Dukach posted the sixteenth-fastest time, finishing less than nine-tenths of a second behind Jonas Müller. In his second run, he came within a step of the top ten, finishing just over half a second behind the leader, Dominik Fischnaller. Andrii Mandzii, a five-time Olympian, placed 25th in the first training round, 2.5 seconds off the lead. He improved to 22nd place in the second round, finishing one and a half seconds behind the leader.

On February 5, 2026, lugers Yulianna Tunytska and Olena Smaha are scheduled to begin their training sessions. The official delegation of the Ukrainian team for the 2026 Games totals 103 individuals.

The initial training sessions for Ukrainian athletes at the 2026 Olympics highlighted the intense level of competition and the challenges they face. While the results are not yet at the top tier, it is important to consider that for many, this is their debut on such a significant global stage. The substantial size of the Ukrainian delegation underscores the country's active participation in the Winter Olympics, despite not fielding athletes in certain disciplines like curling. The coming days promise further interest as more athletes join the competition, with the potential to improve the team's overall standing.
