Results of 2025: Key International Events Impacting Ukraine
The year 2025 for Ukraine on the international stage can be described in one word — Trump. The return of Donald Trump to the White House as the 47th president of the USA became the main informational and political factor that determined the global agenda and directly impacted Ukraine. This was reported by Iron MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
International Events of 2025: How US Decisions Impacted Ukraine
People's Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak in his video recalled that the count of key events began with the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20. After that, statements about «ending the war in 24 hours», contacts with the Kremlin and attempts to return Russia to a negotiating format as an equal party were made. The culmination was the resonant meeting of the US president with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which caused serious resonance in the media and public sector.
One of the first decisions of the new US administration was the curtailment of international grant programs by USAID. This hit hard a number of Ukrainian projects in energy, anti-corruption, digital transformation, and independent journalism. In 2024, Ukraine received over 5 billion dollars under these programs, which did not arrive in 2025.
The Role of the EU and Ukraine's Neighbors in 2025
After the tension in relations between Kyiv and Washington, on May 1, Ukraine and the USA signed an agreement on useful minerals. This became a condition for maintaining support from the Trump administration and envisaged the creation of a joint investment fund with reinvestment of income in Ukraine over the first 10 years.
At the same time, at the end of the year, the European Union played a key role. On the night of December 18 to 19, the EU agreed to allocate 90 billion euros to Ukraine for two years, bypassing Hungary's veto. This decision essentially saved the state budget. Also, in December, the European Union adopted the «frontloading» mechanism, which allowed Ukraine to make progress in the Euro-Integration process without formally opening negotiation clusters.
Separately, Zheleznyak mentioned the change in the political landscape in Poland after Karol Nawrocki's victory in the elections and difficult negotiations with Kyiv on historical issues and Euro-Atlantic prospects. Despite this, Poland remained a key ally of Ukraine and the main logistical hub for military aid.
Let us recall that Trump wants to create conditions in Ukraine for a threefold increase in salaries.
