Europe May Resume Russian Energy Imports After War, Says Hungarian Prime Minister
Hungarian Prime Minister’s Stance
According to Главком: Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has suggested that Europe could partially return to using Russian energy sources and reconsider sanctions once Russia’s war against Ukraine ends. In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, he stressed the need for pragmatic ties with Russia, while acknowledging that Moscow poses a security threat to European nations.
“When the war ends, Europe will partly turn back to Russian energy sources and lift sanctions, because it’s about the competitiveness of all of Europe, and no one is interested in maintaining a new economic and political Cold War in the event of future peace.”

He also emphasized that “it cannot be that people in Europe live in fear of Russian sabotage or a Russian attack. Therefore, this war must end, and Ukraine must receive international security guarantees.”
Negotiations and Bilateral Relations
Additionally, Magyar proposed Budapest as a potential venue for peace negotiations to resolve the conflict. He noted that Hungary could offer diplomatic and humanitarian assistance. However, the prime minister also pointed out that Hungary cannot play a decisive role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.
On bilateral relations between Ukraine and Hungary, Magyar reported that the two countries are close to reaching an agreement on the rights of the Hungarian minority:
- Kyiv and Budapest are finalizing technical consultations regarding the rights of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.
This development may signal a thaw in relations between the two states.
The Hungarian prime minister’s remarks highlight the complexity of Europe’s energy policy amid the war in Ukraine. A potential return to Russian energy imports could become a major topic of future debate, especially given the economic interests of EU member states. Moreover, progress in talks over Hungarian minority rights could pave the way for improved Ukraine-Hungary relations, an important factor for regional stability.
As discussions about Europe's energy future unfold, the Hungarian Prime Minister's willingness to engage with Ukraine's leadership may further shape the region's diplomatic landscape. His recent indication of a possible meeting with President Zelensky could pave the way for improved bilateral relations and address ongoing tensions.
