The Northern Sea Route: problems and challenges

According to Главком: The Northern Sea Route (NSR) is becoming increasingly important for Russia; however, the country faces serious challenges in realizing its ambitions for its development. The inability to perform dredging in the ports complicates Moscow's plans. It is estimated that the ports along the NSR require dredging with a total volume of about 60 million cubic meters over the next five years. However, in 2025, Russia was only able to perform dredging in all its ports to the level of approximately 2.2 million cubic meters.

This situation is caused by the lack of domestic dredging capabilities in Russia. Announced plans for the design and construction of dredgers remain mere declarations. Previously, Moscow systematically relied on foreign contractors who had the necessary fleet and technology for large-scale dredging. This highlights the systemic gap between Russia's stated Arctic ambitions and its real capabilities.

The impact of dredging on economic prospects

Moreover, China shows interest in continuous transit along the entire NSR route, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure development to ensure the effective use of this route. However, without proper investments in dredging and the development of port infrastructure, the realization of these plans will remain in question. Thus, the lack of progress in dredging may negatively affect Russia's economic prospects in the Arctic.

The situation with the NSR and dredging problems reflects broader challenges facing Russia in the context of global climate change and increasing international competition for Arctic resources. The lack of investment and technology can not only slow down the development of this strategic route but also limit Russia's capacities for integration into global trade networks. Thus, the situation on the NSR is an important indicator not only for Russia but also for other countries interested in the development of the Arctic territory.
