Trump Administration Official Set to Attend Russian Economic Forum for First Time in Years
U.S. Representative to Participate in St. Petersburg International Economic Forum
According to Главком: A member of President Donald Trump's administration is poised to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia, marking the first such visit in several years. Rodney Mims Cook, Chairman of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, will travel to St. Petersburg for the event. Both the forum's organizing committee and the U.S. State Department have officially confirmed this development. Cook's presence is expected to highlight the potential for renewed dialogue between the United States and Russia, despite ongoing tensions in bilateral relations.
Background on Rodney Mims Cook
Rodney Mims Cook assumed leadership of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts in January 2026. He is the founder of the National Memorial Foundation of the United States and serves as a specialist in Russian cultural heritage for the World Monuments Fund. Cook has been involved in the restoration of the Resurrection New Jerusalem Monastery in Russia and has repeatedly spoken at the Russian Embassy in Washington, as well as delivered lectures at the Kremlin, Yasnaya Polyana, and the Arkhangelskoye Estate Museum.
Robert Agee, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, noted that a significantly larger number of U.S. companies are expected to participate in the forum in 2026. Meanwhile, against this backdrop, the Central Bank of Russia sold nearly 28 tons of gold, valued at approximately $4.3 billion. This reduction in Russia's gold reserves represents the largest such decline since 2002.
Additionally, the Russian military is reportedly losing around 35,000 soldiers killed and wounded each month. Russian opposition journalists estimate total occupier casualties at 352,000, with roughly 217,800 individually verified. It is worth noting that the Russian army has completely stopped increasing its overall troop numbers since the beginning of the year.
As of now, Ukraine's defense forces have liberated a significant portion of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region since November 2025, and during the winter and spring of 2026, they reclaimed over 400 square kilometers in southern Ukraine. Since late April 2026, defense forces have also freed several settlements in western Zaporizhzhia region.
Rodney Mims Cook: 'I have been invited to the plenary session and the speech by President Putin. And I will be present.'
The attendance of a U.S. representative at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum may signal efforts to restart dialogue between Washington and Moscow, despite existing political disagreements. This could also open new avenues for cooperation in cultural and economic spheres, particularly as American business interest in Russia appears to be growing. At the same time, Russia's military losses and ongoing combat operations in Ukraine continue to shape the broader political climate in the region.
As the U.S. prepares for renewed engagement with Russia, the prospect of a potential Trump visit to Russia in 2026 to discuss peace in the region adds another layer of complexity to the diplomatic landscape. This visit could further influence the ongoing dialogue and economic partnerships highlighted by Cook's attendance at the St. Petersburg Forum.
