Estonian Ambassador’s Statement on the 2027 Parliamentary Elections

According to Главком: Anneli Kolk, Estonia’s ambassador to Ukraine, has declared that pro-Russian factions cannot win the country’s 2027 parliamentary elections. She emphasized that most parties expected to run are already present in the current legislature. Kolk further noted that these parties share a unified stance on supporting Ukraine, underscoring the consistency of Estonia’s policy in this area.

According to Kolk, the same political groups have dominated Estonian elections for the past 15 years.

“It’s hard to predict the outcome, but for the last 15 years, the same parties-with the same voter base-have come out on top. Some shifts are possible, but I want to stress that pro-Russian parties-if that’s what concerns you-are steadily losing influence,”

she stated.

Support for Ukraine

The previous Riigikogu elections took place on March 5, 2023, with the Reform Party, led by Kaja Kallas, emerging victorious. Kallas now serves as the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Estonia continues to lead globally in military and financial aid to Ukraine relative to its GDP. Specifically, Tallinn advocates using frozen Russian assets to help rebuild Ukraine.

Kolk also shared her hopes for the war’s conclusion:

“My dream is that the war against Ukraine ends not in 2027, but tomorrow. However, I am convinced we will defeat Russia together. And it must be a victory-otherwise, Russia will return.”

She added that she sees no reason for Estonian political forces to reduce their support for Ukraine:

“Most parties running in 2027 are already represented in Estonia’s parliament. There are no disagreements among them regarding aid to Ukraine, so I see no grounds for scaling back such support.”

Ukraine’s ambassador to Estonia, Volodymyr Boiechko, also sees no risk of pro-Russian forces gaining ground ahead of the 2027 elections. Estonia’s continued backing of Ukraine reflects a broader consolidation of international assistance during a difficult period for the country.

These statements from Estonia’s ambassador highlight the resilience of Tallinn’s political course in supporting Ukraine-a critical factor amid the ongoing war. The stability of Estonia’s political landscape, where major parties jointly back aid to Ukraine, signals the country’s readiness to maintain active diplomatic and military support. This could also strengthen Estonia’s international standing within the European Union and NATO on regional security issues.

As Estonia prepares for the upcoming elections, it remains steadfast in its commitment to support Ukraine. This commitment is underscored by the recent announcement of over €100 million in defense aid, as detailed by the ambassador.
