130 Hectare Blaze Contained in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone by Emergency Crews

Rescuers extinguish fire in Chernobyl zone
Рятувальники успішно локалізували великий вогонь на території зони відчуження Чорнобиля, площею 130 гектарів.

Fire Situation in the Chernobyl Zone

According to Главком: Firefighters from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES) have successfully contained a blaze covering 130 hectares at one location within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Efforts are still underway at three other hotspots, with one of them now localized. Authorities report that the situation remains under control, and radiation levels are within safe limits.

Rescue units from multiple regions across Ukraine have been deployed to combat the fires. A major challenge, however, is the lack of nearby water sources, forcing crews to transport water over long distances and slowing suppression efforts. To boost efficiency, heavy engineering equipment is being used to build access roads and create mineralized firebreaks.

Environmental and Social Impact

Forest fires continue to burn within the Chernobyl zone, with smoke drifting over the capital in the morning hours. While two large fire sites have already been extinguished, emergency teams remain active at other locations. Drone surveillance has detected new smoke plumes emerging in another area. The SES commented:

“Day after day, in exhausting heat, shoulder to shoulder with units from other parts of Ukraine, firefighters are giving their all to stop the flames from spreading. This is not just about protecting the ecosystem. It’s a fight for clean air-the air that residents of Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and neighboring areas breathe.” - SES

The fires in the Chernobyl zone pose serious environmental and social risks. Beyond threatening natural resources, they can degrade air quality across regions adjacent to the exclusion zone. Given the limited resources available for firefighting, continued coordination among rescue teams and sustained support for suppression operations are critical. Preventing similar incidents in the future also demands attention from government agencies and environmental services.

The ongoing wildfires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone have significant implications for air quality in surrounding regions. As smoke spreads over Kyiv, residents are increasingly concerned about the impact on their health.
