Russian Troop Pullout from Qamishli

According to Главком: Russia has initiated a withdrawal of its military forces from Qamishli Airport in northeastern Syria, a process that began last week. While some personnel are being relocated to the Russian-controlled Hmeimim Air Base within Syria, the remainder are returning to Russia. The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on this development. This move represents a significant shift in Russia's military footprint in Syria, where it has been a key backer of the Assad regime since 2015.

Despite the withdrawal, Russian flags and aviation equipment remain at the Qamishli airfield, indicating that certain elements of Russia's presence are being maintained. Russia first established its military presence at this location in 2019, making this pullout a notable event in the context of its Syrian operations.

Resumption of Military Flights

Concurrently, Russia has resumed military flights to Hmeimim Air Base after a hiatus of nearly half a year. At least two Russian military aircraft have already conducted flights to the Syrian port city of Latakia, where the base is located. It is important to note that both the Hmeimim Air Base and the naval facility in Tartus will remain under Russian control, underscoring the stability of Moscow's core strategic positions in the country.

The withdrawal from Qamishli may signal an adjustment to Russia's military strategy in the region and potential shifts in the Syrian balance of power. However, the continued control over the critical bases at Hmeimim and Tartus demonstrates Russia's intent to preserve a long-term military presence in Syria, which will likely influence the future dynamics of the conflict and its relations with other international actors.
