Kyiv Under Heavy Fire on May 24, 2026
According to Главком: In the early hours of Sunday, May 24, 2026, Kyiv was hit by a large-scale bombardment that damaged key social infrastructure. Among the affected sites were the Kyiv Municipal Center for the Rehabilitation of Children with Disabilities and the city’s Children and Family Affairs Service. The Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theater and the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine also sustained damage. This attack is part of the ongoing Russian military campaign targeting civilian areas in Ukraine.
At the children’s rehabilitation center, over 100 windows were shattered and all entrance doors were blown off. No children were present at the time, and security staff were safely in a shelter, so there were no casualties. Due to the destruction, the facility’s administration decided to suspend operations temporarily. The Children and Family Affairs Service, located in the Lukianivka district, was also hit. This marks the fifth time the building has been damaged since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Cultural Landmarks Also Hit
The attack additionally damaged the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theater and the Institute of Literature, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. City officials announced that the theater would be closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the damage.
'We will provide further updates on operations and any changes,' city authorities stated.
The bombardment was a combined missile and drone strike by the Russian Federation, underscoring the ongoing threat to the capital and the country. These events have raised public concern and highlight the urgent need for safety measures and the restoration of damaged facilities.
This incident illustrates the continued impact of warfare on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, especially social and cultural institutions. Damage to facilities like the children’s rehabilitation center and theaters can have long-term effects on the community, including reduced access to essential services for vulnerable populations.
