World Champion Wrestler from Russia Travels Illegally to Annexed Crimea
Arthur Sargsyan's Visit to Crimea
According to Главком: Russian Greco-Roman wrestler Arthur Sargsyan made an unauthorized trip to the annexed Crimean peninsula while attending a training camp in Alushta. A video of his stay in the occupied territory was posted to his Instagram account. He entered the region without going through Ukrainian customs or border control, which violates the country's laws.
Sargsyan has achieved notable success in his sport, taking home a silver medal at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships and a bronze at the 2026 continental championships. He is also a multiple-time Russian national champion, underscoring his high level of skill on the mat.
Elimination of Russian Occupiers
Meanwhile, Ukrainian defense forces have taken out two Russian occupiers:
- Georgy Kamalov: Aged 46, he played for the Era Vladivostok team from 2003 to 2011. After a career-ending injury, he moved into coaching, starting within the Era system. In recent years, Kamalov worked with the football club Anri, leading them to the level of the Russian Cup.
- Chingiz Dodiyev: Born on December 1, 1993, in the village of Baraghan in the Kurumkansky District of the Republic of Buryatia. Dodiyev holds titles as a Master of Sports in hand-to-hand combat and a Candidate for Master of Sports in army hand-to-hand combat, as well as in universal karate Ukado/Kempo. He is a black belt holder (2nd dan) in self-defense, a three-time champion of the Russian Cup in universal karate Ukado/Kempo, a two-time champion of the Northwest in hand-to-hand combat among law enforcement agencies, a three-time medalist of the Trans-Baikal Territory in army hand-to-hand combat, and a medalist of the Republic of Buryatia in combat sambo.
These incidents highlight the region's volatile situation and ongoing violations of international law amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The illegal entry of Russian athletes into Crimea shows a disregard for global norms, while the elimination of occupiers underscores the continued hostilities and confrontation between the warring sides.
The recent actions of athletes, such as Arthur Sargsyan's unauthorized visit to Crimea, reflect a broader trend of controversy surrounding Russia's participation in international sports. This situation is further complicated by events like the withdrawal of Russian teams from competitions due to bans on national symbols, highlighting the ongoing tensions between sports and geopolitics.
