Fraudulent Military Parts Scheme Exposed

According to САП: Ukraine’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) have uncovered a scheme involving the theft of military supplies, leading to charges against a former deputy commander of a military unit in the Kharkiv region. Between 2022 and 2024, a network of companies and individual entrepreneurs supplied spare parts for armored vehicles worth over 350 million Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $9.5 million). A portion of these parts belonged to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and was stored in the unit’s warehouses.

According to investigators, at the start of the full-scale invasion, the spare parts were illegally written off as destroyed by Russian strikes. They were then removed from the military base and resold back to the state. The alleged mastermind, the former deputy commander, now faces multiple charges under Ukraine’s Criminal Code, including bribery and theft of military property. This case highlights the ongoing challenge of safeguarding defense resources during wartime.

Investigation and Consequences

The former deputy commander is accused of receiving at least 2.8 million hryvnias (around $76,000) in illicit payments. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. Under Article 62 of Ukraine’s Constitution, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court verdict.

Authorities continue to probe the details of the case to uncover all circumstances. Law enforcement is working to identify any accomplices and prevent similar offenses in the future.

This case underscores the critical importance of combating corruption and abuse during wartime, when resources essential for national defense are at stake. The exposure of such a scheme demonstrates the proactive efforts of law enforcement agencies to detect and punish criminal activities that harm Ukraine’s national security. The ongoing investigation aims to bring all those responsible to justice and deter future theft of military assets.

The recent uncovering of a $9.5 million military parts theft scheme is not an isolated incident. In a similar vein, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has also revealed a scheme that embezzled UAH 36 million from Ukraine's State Reserve. Such cases highlight the pervasive issue of corruption within critical state resources, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and accountability.
