Saudi Aramco Engages Ukrainian Drone Makers

According to ХВИЛЯ: According to The Wall Street Journal, Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil giant, Aramco, is negotiating with Ukrainian companies to purchase interceptor drones to defend its oil fields. The primary objective of these talks is to bolster defenses against potential attacks from Iran. This move highlights how the global defense industry is adapting to modern asymmetric threats.

Aramco representatives are in discussions with two specific Ukrainian manufacturers:

  • SkyFall, the producer of the P1-SUN drone;
  • Wild Hornets, the developer of the STING model.

Separately, the Saudi government is also conducting its own negotiations with Kyiv for the purchase of interceptor drones. As part of this effort, Saudi officials have been in contact with the Ukrainian company Phantom Defense. The urgent need for enhanced oil field protection follows a recent drone attack on the Berri oil field.

Deepening Ukraine-Saudi Security Cooperation

To strengthen this partnership, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on March 10 that expert teams were being dispatched to the Middle East.

“Ukraine has already sent three teams of experts who will assist in countering Iranian drones in Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia,” he stated.

These teams aim to improve the region's defenses against threats posed by unmanned aerial vehicles.

The STING drone is an FPV (First-Person View) interceptor designed to destroy combat UAVs like the Shahed and reconnaissance drones. Its manufacturer reports a successful hit rate averaging 80-90%. Key technical specifications for the STING include:

  • A top speed of 315 km/h;
  • An operational altitude of up to 7 km;
  • A flight range of 37 km;
  • Flight endurance of up to 15 minutes;
  • A payload capacity of 0.5 kg;
  • A 500-gram warhead;
  • A deployment time of under 15 minutes;
  • A unit cost of approximately $1,000.

This active security collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Ukrainian firms could significantly enhance the protection of vital oil infrastructure. Amid rising regional tensions linked to Iranian attacks, such a deal may also strengthen strategic ties between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia, reflecting broader global trends where drone technology is becoming increasingly critical for national security.
