Denmark is changing the rules for granting temporary protection for citizens of Ukraine. The new restrictions will apply to men of conscription age who are subject to mobilization and do not have an official exemption from military service. At the same time, already issued permits will not be automatically revoked. This is reported by InPoland.

Temporary protection in Denmark: new rules for Ukrainian men

The Danish government has announced that men aged 23 to 60 who are subject to mobilization in Ukraine and are not exempt will no longer be able to receive temporary protection under a special law enacted after the start of the full-scale war.

As explained by the Danish Minister of Immigration and Integration, Morten Bødskov, the decision is aimed at reducing the risk of draft evasion and supporting Ukraine's defense capability.

At the same time, the changes do not mean automatic cancellation of the already obtained status. Issued permits will remain valid until their expiration date.

Ukrainians in Denmark: when will the new restrictions take effect

The new rules will apply when submitting applications for residence permit renewals. At this stage, the Danish authorities will check whether the applicant meets the updated requirements.

As of early May 2026, approximately 47.6 thousand citizens of Ukraine were benefiting from temporary protection in Denmark. The special law, which has been in effect since 2022, grants the right to live, work, study, and access the public healthcare system.

The Danish government also announced that it will continue to review the rules regarding Ukrainian refugees depending on the developments of the military situation and migration processes. Additional changes in the future are not ruled out.

It should be noted that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have signed the Drone Deal agreement, making Denmark the ninth participating country in this initiative.
