Slovakia Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainians Through 2027
Ukrainians Granted Extended Protection in Slovakia
According to Главком: Slovakia's government has extended its temporary protection scheme for Ukrainian citizens until March 4, 2027. This decision means that the status for those already under this protection will be renewed automatically. Refugees will generally not need to submit additional applications to the police, significantly simplifying the renewal process. This move provides crucial stability for displaced Ukrainians as the war in their homeland continues.
Under the extended terms, Ukrainians will retain their rights to:
- legal residence;
- access to the labor market;
- healthcare services;
- education for children;
- basic social assistance.
This extension represents a significant commitment to supporting the Ukrainian citizens who have sought refuge in Slovakia.
Slovakia Halts Diesel Exports to Ukraine
In a separate development, Slovakia has also announced a decision to stop exporting diesel fuel to Ukraine. Prime Minister Robert Fico ordered the halt in supply via the Druzhba pipeline, a consequence of Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. To secure its domestic market, the government plans to release 250,000 tons of oil from its strategic reserves. This decision highlights the complex economic pressures European nations face due to the ongoing conflict.
The extension of temporary protection underscores Slovakia's continued support for refugees against the backdrop of the prolonged war in Ukraine. It will help reduce administrative hurdles for Ukrainians seeking stability. Conversely, the suspension of diesel exports, driven by the need to safeguard domestic energy supplies, points to the broader challenges Slovakia confronts amid persistent regional energy security concerns.
