Spotify Inks Licensing Agreement with Universal Music Group

According to НВ — Техно: On May 22, Spotify announced it had reached a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG) to enable fans to create covers and remixes using generative artificial intelligence. The streaming giant did not disclose a launch date or pricing details for the upcoming service. This move is part of Spotify’s broader strategy; over the past year, it has collaborated with UMG, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe to develop AI-powered products.

Legal Challenges in the AI Music Space

Early players in the AI music space, such as Suno and Udio, are facing legal hurdles. Major record labels, including UMG and Sony Music, have filed copyright infringement lawsuits against these services. In November of last year, Suno settled a $500 million lawsuit brought by Warner Music Group, while UMG reached a settlement in its own case against Udio. Suno continues to face copyright claims from UMG and Sony Music, and Udio is currently in negotiations with Sony.

During its Investor Day, Spotify announced the start of its partnership with UMG and emphasized the need for prior agreements with rights holders before launching such tools.

“These tools must be developed through prior arrangements with rights holders, not after a service goes live,” a Spotify representative stated.

They also stressed that 'artists and rights owners should decide for themselves whether to participate in AI tools and receive fair compensation for the use of their music.'

Alex Nostrom of Spotify shared that the company aims to develop fan covers and remixes with artist consent, proper attribution, and payments to musicians and songwriters. Lucian Grainge added that this new format would help artists strengthen their connection with fans and generate additional revenue.

Spotify continues to invest in AI technologies, rolling out new features for podcasters, tools for audiobook creation, a program for personalized podcasts, and a concert ticket reservation system for its most active fans.

The significance of the Spotify-UMG deal lies in its potential to reshape how music is created and consumed in the age of new technology. Securing consent from rights holders and artists for the use of their works in generative projects could foster a more transparent and ethical approach to copyright in the music industry. It also opens up fresh avenues for creative expression for artists and their fans, creating new formats for interaction and revenue streams within the industry.
