U.S. Oil Sanctions Against Russia Are Back in Effect

According to Главком: The United States has reinstated oil sanctions on Russia after a temporary easing that lasted several months due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. These measures target the companies Rosneft and Lukoil. In May, the U.S. Treasury extended a sanctions exemption for Russian oil by 30 days, but those restrictions have now been reactivated.

Turkish shipping firms are being used as a tool to bypass Western sanctions on Russian oil exports. They have become a key logistics hub for the so-called 'shadow fleet' that helps Moscow circumvent restrictions. Donald Trump hinted at the return of these sanctions on the sidelines of the G7 summit, underscoring their importance in the current geopolitical landscape.

EU Prepares a New Sanctions Package

Meanwhile, the European Union is preparing its 21st sanctions package, which will include restrictions on the banking sector, cryptocurrency operators, the 'shadow fleet,' and energy exports. The new package also proposes a ban on entry into the EU for former Russian military personnel. A final decision on the package is expected after negotiations conclude.

The reinstatement of U.S. sanctions against Russian oil companies highlights the ongoing geopolitical pressure on Moscow amid rising tensions in the region. At the same time, Turkey's role in sanction evasion shows that the Russian economy may still find alternative routes for its energy resources. The planned EU sanctions package, which includes new banking and export restrictions, could further complicate the situation for Russia and its economic partners.

The reintroduction of U.S. oil sanctions against Russia comes at a time when the European Union is also intensifying its efforts to combat external support for Moscow. Notably, the EU is considering sanctions against firms from China and Turkey that assist in circumventing these restrictions. This coordinated approach underscores the growing international pressure on Russia and highlights the complexities of the current geopolitical landscape.
