U.S. Approves $373.6 Million Sale of JDAM-ER Bombs to Ukraine
Ukraine to Receive JDAM-ER Aerial Bomb Systems
According to Главком: The United States has greenlit the transfer of equipment for Joint Direct Attack Munitions – Extended Range (JDAM-ER) aerial bombs to Ukraine, with the package valued at $373.6 million. Kyiv’s request specifically includes:
- 1,200 KMU-572 tail kits
- 332 KMU-556 units
The deal also covers the delivery of software, spare parts, consumables, maintenance gear, as well as engineering, logistics, and technical support.
Funding and Support for Ukraine
Boeing has been designated as the primary contractor. The JDAM technology upgrades conventional bombs into precision-guided munitions using inertial navigation and GPS. The Extended Range (ER) variant features a special folding wing. By the end of 2016, Boeing had produced approximately 300,000 JDAM units, and by early 2024, that number had reached 550,000 kits.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the Pentagon has unlocked $400 million in funding for Ukraine. These funds had previously been approved by Congress.
“The funding was allocated for building European capacity, and as of yesterday, it was released,” Hegseth stated.
The U.S. State Department noted that the proposed sale will help bolster Ukraine’s ability to address both current and future threats. It will provide Ukraine with additional means to carry out self-defense missions and enhance regional security through a stronger air defense capability.
This supply is part of broader U.S. efforts to support Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. Precision aerial munitions like the JDAM-ER can significantly improve the effectiveness of Ukrainian forces against aggression. The increase in funding and the provision of advanced weaponry underscore the continued strategic backing from the United States and its allies, which is critical for maintaining stability in the region.
