The status of refugees in Germany will change in 2027: what Ukrainians should do
Jan Schneider, head of one of the departments of the Expert Council on Integration and Migration in Germany, reported this, emphasizing that the German authorities are actively implementing the recommendations of the EU Council regarding Ukrainian refugees, focusing on their possible return to their homeland to participate in the country's reconstruction.
Ukrainian refugees in Germany and other European Union countries under temporary protection will be able to hold this status only until March 2027. However, German authorities are already calling on citizens of Ukraine to consider changing their legal status.
Ukrainian refugees have the opportunity to retain their temporary status or apply for a national residence permit. To obtain a new status, one must have financial stability, no criminal record, and a valid Ukrainian passport. With it, one can obtain a work visa or a study permit under the Ausbildung program.
The process of changing status is often complicated in practice by delays and insufficient information in local migration authorities, but German officials claim that there are no additional obstacles, and delays are related to checking compliance with all requirements.
Summary:Ukrainian refugees in Germany and other European Union countries can change their legal status by March 2027. German authorities recommend that they consider retaining temporary protection or applying for a national residence permit, as well as actively working to facilitate their return to Ukraine for participation in the country's reconstruction.
