Retired Judges in Ukraine Receive Over 100,000 Hryvnias, While Most Pensioners Get a Fraction
A Stark Pension Gap in Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: A significant disparity in pension payments exists in Ukraine between former judges and ordinary retirees. The highest monthly pension for a retired judge reached 390,000 hryvnias, with the average for this group being about 107,000 hryvnias. In stark contrast, over 62% of regular pensioners receive less than 5,000 hryvnias per month. This situation highlights a deep inequality within the country's social security system, which has been under strain for years.
Issues of Social Fairness
The average pension, when converted to U.S. dollars, does not exceed $104, and the minimum pension barely reaches $57. More than half of all pensioners receive payments that are at least twice as low as the actual subsistence minimum. The high payments to judges are guaranteed by a special legal framework that provides a lifetime monthly allowance, pegged to the salaries of active judges. The base amount of this lifetime allowance is 50% of a judge's salary, with an additional 2% added for each year of service beyond 20 years. The Pension Fund has confirmed that these payments are not subject to any cap.
The authors of the 'Legal Network' channel emphasize: 'How did it happen that within a single pension system, the gap in payments isn't two or threefold, but tens or even over a hundred times?'
The severe imbalance in pension payments underscores profound issues of social justice and equality. The distribution of pension funds and their adequacy require urgent consideration at the level of state policy, as the vast difference in payments for different categories of retirees creates significant social tension. Future developments may depend on government initiatives to reform the pension system, which could include revising the regulations governing pensions for judges and other professions.
As the disparity in pension payments becomes increasingly evident, it's important to consider other groups affected by similar issues. Recently, the Ukrainian Pension Fund announced reductions in additional payments for military retirees, highlighting ongoing challenges within the pension system. This further emphasizes the need for comprehensive reform to address the significant inequalities faced by various categories of pensioners.
