Hong Myung-bo Steps Down Following 2026 World Cup Group Stage Exit

According to Главком: Hong Myung-bo has resigned as head coach of the Republic of Korea national team after the squad failed to advance to the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Finishing third in Group A, South Korea missed out on a spot in the Round of 16, as they did not qualify among the best third-placed teams. Hong, who took over in 2024 for his second stint with the team, previously coached the national side from 2013 to 2014, where they also failed to progress past the group stage at the 2014 World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup knockout stage kicks off on June 28. The Round of 16 begins with a match between South Africa and Canada in Inglewood, USA, and concludes on the night of July 3 with Colombia facing Ghana. This expanded tournament features 48 teams, with the top two from each group plus the four best third-placed teams advancing.

Notably, France's Didier Deschamps set a record for most World Cup victories by a coach, reaching 17 wins and surpassing the previous mark held by Helmut Schön. Additionally, FIFA has authorized Russia's under-15 youth team to compete in the upcoming World Cup for 15-year-olds, set to take place in Azerbaijan this autumn.
