Toilet Paper Is Losing Popularity: Why Ukrainians Are Switching to Bidets

The Choice Between Toilet Paper and Bidet
Попит на біде зростає: українці обирають комфорт та екологічність.

Trend of Refusing Toilet Paper

Traditional toilet paper is gradually losing popularity in developed countries, including Ukraine, due to environmental and health aspects. There is a notable increase in the use of electronic washing systems, such as bidets and hygienic showers. In Japan, for example, over 80% of households are equipped with electronic washing systems, indicating a shift in consumer habits.

Producing one roll of toilet paper requires about 140 liters of water and hundreds of grams of wood. This raises concerns, as the pulp industry consumes up to 15% of the world's wood. In Ukraine, an average family spends between 1000 and 2000 hryvnias a year on quality toilet paper. In comparison, using a bidet or hygienic shower costs only 200-300 hryvnias a year. The payback period for a bidet or hygienic shower system is just 1-2 years, making them economically viable.

Advantages of New Technologies

In addition to financial benefits, new technologies offer other advantages. Modern devices have instant water heating or thermostats that help avoid discomfort. Nozzles in 'smart' toilets undergo automatic disinfection, enhancing hygiene levels. Additionally, warm air drying features allow for the elimination of towels or paper, which also contributes to environmental friendliness.

Changing social standards and awareness of environmental issues are encouraging Ukrainians to choose more efficient and safer solutions. This trend indicates that toilet paper may become a rarity in the future, as consumers are increasingly turning to alternatives that not only enhance comfort but also reduce negative impacts on the environment.

The trend of refusing traditional toilet paper in favor of electronic washing systems could be an important step in reducing ecological footprints. Given that resource consumption for toilet paper production is significant, transitioning to more ecological alternatives could positively affect the environment. In light of these changes, manufacturers may begin to adapt their products and offerings to meet new consumer demands and environmental standards.
