The New Leadership of the Czech Republic Took Down the Ukrainian Flag from the Parliament Building

New Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic, Tomio Okamura, decided to remove the Ukrainian flag from the parliament building on his first day in office, a flag that had been displayed there since the beginning of the invasion as a sign of support for Ukraine.

The corresponding video published on social media shows the flag being taken down from the building.

Okamura explained his actions as 'a certain symbol'.

'This is a certain symbol. The Ukrainian flag was taken down from the building of the Czech Chamber of Deputies at my direction, and it took a few seconds,' the Speaker stated in a comment to the iDNES portal.

Disavowal of Solidarity

The Ukrainian flag was taken down from the parliament building less than a day after Tomio Okamura became the head of the lower house of the Czech parliament. This was done in fulfillment of a promise regarding Czech symbols on government buildings.

The Ukrainian flag had been displayed on the Chamber of Deputies since February 2022 as a symbol of support for Ukrainians during the war with Russia. The former head, Marketa Pekarova Adamova, considered this symbol shameful. Opposition deputies from the STAN movement also decided to display the Ukrainian flag on the balcony of their faction as an act of protest.

After Tomio Okamura was elected as the head of the lower house of the Czech parliament, the Ukrainian flag was removed from the building within a few hours. This decision was made in fulfillment of a pre-election promise that only Czech symbols should be on government buildings in the Czech Republic. The Ukrainian flag once symbolized support for Ukrainians during the war with Russia, but now the Czech Republic is moving in a different direction.
