Fires in the Chernobyl Zone

According to Главком: On May 14, fires broke out in the Kyiv region's Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, specifically within the Opachychi and Korohod natural reserve areas (NRAs), after an attack by Russian ‘Geran-2’ drones. As of May 15, the blaze in the Korohod NRA had been extinguished over a one-hectare area. Meanwhile, firefighters continue working to contain three separate fire pockets in the Opachychi NRA, which together span 82 hectares.

Additionally, a separate fire that had ignited on May 8 was fully put out on May 13. This larger fire had burned across 1,200 hectares, with containment achieved by May 10 and complete extinguishment late on May 12.

Attack on Kyiv

In the early hours of May 14, Russian forces launched a massive combined assault on Kyiv, using both ballistic missiles and drones. Multiple districts of the capital came under fire, including:

  • Shevchenkivskyi
  • Pecherskyi
  • Darnytskyi
  • Dniprovskyi
  • Obolonskyi
  • Solomianskyi
  • Desnianskyi
  • Sviatoshynskyi
  • Holosiivskyi

Damage and fires were also reported in the Obukhiv, Brovary, Fastiv, Boryspil, and Bila Tserkva districts of the Kyiv region.

As stated by representatives of the Chernobyl Reserve: 'As of 14:00, the fire in the Korohod NRA was extinguished over an area of 1 hectare.'

The situation remains tense as efforts to contain the fire hotspots in the Opachychi NRA continue.

These events highlight the intensification of military hostilities in Ukraine, particularly within a zone of major ecological significance due to its history and protected status. The fires in the Chernobyl area raise concerns about potential environmental fallout and risks to both public health and the surrounding ecosystem. At the same time, the strikes on Kyiv and its adjacent regions underscore the ongoing military campaign, which continues to destabilize the area and disrupt the lives of its residents.

The recent fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, exacerbated by military actions, echo the challenges faced just days prior.
