Kyiv University Reports Just 58 Bachelor's Students Over 25, Rector Details Admissions Policy
Student Statistics at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv
According to Главком: Vladimir Bugrov, the Rector of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, has provided student enrollment data, highlighting the number of bachelor's degree students over the age of 25 and explaining admission procedures designed to prevent the use of studies to avoid military mobilization. According to the figures, the university has 19,904 bachelor's students, of whom only 58 are older than 25. This represents a mere 1% of the total male student population. These figures come amid a national context where higher education and military service obligations are closely scrutinized.
University classes are conducted in-person. The Rector noted that instructors and dean's offices have a mandate to report on attendance. While attendance does not affect grades, the dean's offices perform checks. Vladimir Bugrov also emphasized that admission to bachelor's programs is based solely on external exams, while individuals from privileged categories may enter via internal exams. No such privileges exist for master's program admissions.
Graduate School Admissions and Statistical Data
For entry into postgraduate studies (aspirantura), applicants must take the Unified Professional Entrance Exam (UPE) and a single entrance test in research methodology. The results of these entrance exams are accepted by a subdivision of the Ministry of Education and Science. Documents are submitted electronically through the Unified State Electronic Database on Education. Vladimir Bugrov also noted that last year, there were difficulties in providing postgraduate students with appropriate scientific supervisors due to a shortage of them at the university.
Statistical data indicates trends in student numbers at KNU:
- The number of bachelor's students was 20,906 in 2020 and will decrease to 19,904 by 2025.
- The number of master's students was 7,179 in 2020 and will increase to 7,295 by 2025.
- The number of postgraduate students was 862 in 2020, 1,097 in 2021, and will rise to 1,532 by 2025.
These indicators demonstrate shifts within Ukraine's higher education system. The decline in bachelor's students at KNU may reflect broader national trends in higher education, influenced by socio-economic changes and the impact of mobilization. Conversely, the growth in master's and postgraduate numbers could point to an increased interest in advanced education and scientific research, despite the challenges the country faces. This may be a significant factor for developing Ukraine's human capital in the future.
As the university navigates the complexities of student enrollment amidst shifting demographics, recent reports highlight a contrasting trend in postgraduate studies. While the number of bachelor's students has declined, there is a noticeable increase in graduate admissions. This shift is indicative of broader changes in higher education, which you can explore further in our detailed analysis of student trends at the university here.
