Ukraine introduces European standards for clinical research: what will change

Ukraine standardizes clinical research: main changes
В Україні впроваджують нові стандарти для клінічних досліджень: які зміни нас чекають?

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: A forum was held in Lviv, attended by Ukraine's Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko. The event was dedicated to clinical and preclinical research in wartime.

Despite the military conflict, clinical research in Ukraine continues to develop actively. As of November 2025, 249 clinical trials had been initiated in the country, with another 45 preparing to start.

“The number of new applications from international sponsors has increased by almost 18%. This is a very important signal: the international community sees the potential of Ukrainian clinical centers, trusts our teams, and continues to work with Ukraine”

New rules and European standards

In 2027, Ukraine will introduce an updated regulatory system for clinical research that complies with European norms. This will promote greater transparency in the application submission process, establish clear requirements for researchers and the sites conducting the research.

In addition, starting from the third quarter of 2026, clinical trials in Ukraine will only be conducted in institutions that receive clinical status. This will facilitate the creation of a network of centers with high-quality standards and international research infrastructure.

“Our medical institutions have already signed 47 partnership agreements with universities and university hospitals in Europe as part of the international medical partnership initiative launched by First Lady Olena Zelenska.”

Investments in modern equipment

In 2025, Ukraine’s Medical Procurements acquired modern equipment, enabling the development of high-tech research and innovations in medicine.

New Clinical Research Center in Lviv

The first Clinical Research Center was opened at the University Hospital of the Lviv National Medical University named after Daniel of Galicia (LNMU). Sixty-eight research studies are already being conducted here, with another eight at other clinical bases of the university.

The Minister expressed gratitude to all participants who contribute to the development of clinical research in Ukraine. He emphasized that these steps will create new opportunities for patients and strengthen Ukraine’s European course in medicine.

At the forum in Lviv, issues concerning clinical research in Ukraine, the importance of international cooperation, and the implementation of European standards in this field were discussed. The government is taking steps to improve the rules and conditions for conducting clinical trials, which will enhance the quality and transparency of this process, as well as elevate Ukraine to a European level in the field of medicine.
