In Turkey, an outbreak of a dangerous viral disease
According to glavcom.ua: Turkey has decided to take radical measures to control the spread of foot-and-mouth disease by closing all livestock markets. This decision was made due to the high risk of virus transmission, especially after the Eid al-Adha holiday when livestock is actively traded and animals are relocated. According to the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture, this step will help prevent the widespread transmission of the disease.
The government believes that the temporary closure will not affect the demand and supply of meat and dairy products in Turkey.
About the history of the disease and its consequences
In the early 2000s, Europe was shaken by a serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, particularly in the UK. Urgent measures were taken, including the culling of infected animals and movement restrictions on livestock. This case once again highlighted the importance of rapid response to outbreaks to prevent the spread of disease.
Ukraine has had no cases of foot-and-mouth disease for the past 40 years, but Rivne region is battling African swine fever, which was identified in Vinnytsia region in June of this year.
Turkey's decision to close livestock markets is strategic to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease and serves as a reminder of the importance of timely responses to potential outbreaks to preserve the health and welfare of animals and people.
