A Street in Vyshhorod to Be Renamed After a Fallen Hero of Ukraine
Public Hearings Scheduled in Vyshhorod
According to Главком: On June 16, 2026, the city of Vyshhorod will hold public hearings to discuss renaming Dnipro Street to Oleksii Brekht Street. The session is set to begin at 3:00 PM in the large meeting hall on the second floor of the administrative building located at 1 Shevchenko Square. The initiative is being led by the energy company Ukrenergo and People's Deputy Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk.
Who Was Oleksii Brekht?
Oleksii Brekht, the namesake of the proposed street, was a Hero of Ukraine and former acting chairman of the board of NPC Ukrenergo. He tragically died on January 21, 2026, while on duty in the Kyiv region, after suffering an electric shock at one of Ukrenergo's substations. His death was a major blow to the energy community and the nation as a whole.
Brekht began his professional career in 1999 at the Kyiv Hydroelectric Pumped Storage Plant. He worked at NPC Ukrenergo from 2011 to 2016, and later served as the company's interim chairman from September 2024 to June 2025. In recognition of his dedication and professionalism, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posthumously awarded him the title of Hero of Ukraine. He is buried in the local cemetery of the Vyshhorod community.
Through his work and contributions to the energy sector, Oleksii Brekht left behind a significant legacy, which the street renaming initiative seeks to honor. The public hearings will provide residents of Vyshhorod with an opportunity to voice their opinions and pay tribute to the memory of a Hero of Ukraine.
Renaming the street in honor of Oleksii Brekht symbolizes recognition of his contributions to Ukraine's energy infrastructure and commemorates his sacrifice in the line of duty.
These hearings could serve as a key step in shaping public opinion on the matter, as they highlight not only Brekht's personal story but also the broader societal values of honoring heroes who give their lives in service to the people. Such events foster civic awareness and encourage local residents to engage in resolving socially important issues.
As communities across Ukraine honor their fallen heroes, the recent decision in Netishyn to rename a street after a fallen intelligence officer highlights a growing trend of commemorating those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. This movement reflects not only a desire to remember individual contributions but also to strengthen community ties through shared values of bravery and dedication.
