Ukraine introduces contracts for military personnel: what will change for soldiers
The Ukrainian army, which is experiencing the severe consequences of war, is preparing to implement a new service system. According to information from the publication 'Khvylia', military contracts with fixed terms of service are planned in order to attract more citizens to military service and reduce the burden on military personnel who are already weary from combat.
Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that signing contracts could be a solution for those who do not wish to serve indefinitely, as this could lead to being sent to the front without the possibility of return. From now on, both active military personnel and recruits will have the opportunity to sign contracts for various terms — from one to five years.
According to Shmyhal: 'Soldiers who sign a two-year contract will receive a one-year deferment from possible mobilization after the end of their service.'
This step is aimed at combating draft evasion, which has become relevant due to the prolonged war. Experts believe that the introduction of a new contract system may encourage more individuals to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine and help military personnel feel more respected.
However, some experts and deputies point out that the new system requires deeper analysis and implementation. Previous attempts to improve military recruitment have not always been successful due to insufficient personnel and other problems.
Better regulation of military service could be an important step for Ukraine's army, which is seeking ways to attract new contingents and improve service conditions for existing military personnel.
