Ukraine Aims to Host a Biathlon World Cup Stage, Taking It Away from Russia
Biathlon Complex Under Construction in Bukovel
According to Главком: Ivan Krulko, head of the Biathlon Federation of Ukraine, has shared updates on the development of a new biathlon facility in Bukovel, the state of its infrastructure, and ambitions to host international competitions. According to Krulko, the track is designed so that 70% of the events are visible from the stands, offering spectators an excellent view of the action.
However, the ongoing war in Ukraine has significantly slowed progress on the complex. Krulko noted that additional funding is still required to finish the lighting and asphalt surfacing at the stadium. While no administrative building has been erected yet, all preparations for its construction are in place.
“More investments are needed-to complete the lighting and the asphalt covering on the stadium itself,” Krulko emphasized.
The complex has been built in constant coordination with the International Biathlon Union (IBU). IBU specialists visited the site and provided guidance to ensure the stadium meets certification standards. They have already recognized the venue’s potential to host top-tier international events.
“It’s crucial that this complex was developed with ongoing communication with the IBU, that their experts came, gave advice on how to do things correctly so the stadium could later be certified,” Krulko stated.
The federation leader also stressed that events previously held in the Russian cities of Khanty-Mansiysk and Sochi should be relocated to Ukraine.
“Of course, during wartime, investing money there is probably not a priority for the country. But ideologically and strategically, the competitions that once took place in Russia’s Khanty-Mansiysk or Sochi need to be brought to Ukraine,” he said.
Krulko expressed hope that Ukraine will become the host of a World Cup stage in Eastern Europe. “And in Eastern Europe, we must become the place where one of the World Cup stages will take place during the biathlon season,” he concluded.
Outlook for Growth
The construction of the biathlon complex in Bukovel marks a significant step for winter sports development in Ukraine, especially amid the challenges of war. Efforts to move international competitions from Russia to Ukraine could enhance the country’s image on the global sports stage. Successfully completing the project and securing stadium certification will be key milestones for attracting investment and expanding sports infrastructure in the region.
As Ukraine continues to enhance its biathlon infrastructure, the decision of the Biathlon Federation to exclude foreign athletes and coaches underscores its commitment to fostering local talent and ensuring that upcoming competitions are firmly rooted in Ukrainian soil. This strategic move may further solidify Ukraine's position in the international biathlon community, especially as it aims to host prestigious events previously held in Russia.
