As is known, earlier the European Union agreed to extend sanctions against the Russian Federation for more than six months until January 31, 2016.

Iceland, Montenegro, Albania, Liechtenstein, Norway, as well as Ukraine joined the expansion of restrictive measures regarding Russia until January 31, 2016, taking into account its actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine, as reported on the EU website.

'Candidate countries (seeking membership in the European Union) Montenegro and Albania, and EFTA countries (European Free Trade Association) Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine join this Declaration', stated in the EU diplomat Federica Mogherini's statement.

According to the press release, the European Union takes into account the commitments of the mentioned countries and welcomes them.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko previously called for additional sanctions against the Russian Federation during a meeting with American congressmen in Kyiv. He emphasized that his state needs more support 'against one of the largest armies in the world.'

'The support that has been provided to Ukraine throughout this period - military, technical, and financial, on security issues, moral support, which is very important for me, plays a key, significant role in uniting the country, protecting our values, freedom, and defending democracy against one of the strongest and largest armies in the world', said Petro Poroshenko.

The Ukrainian government has already warned the international community that without support from Europe and the West, Russia may send more troops and capture even more territory of Ukraine.

Nearly 70,000 people have died since the Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine in April last year.

The Russian government continues to ignore the Minsk agreements, and Ukraine and its international partners must be prepared for this, said the Ukrainian leader.

'We need to develop an effective and coordinated plan for what we will do if they continue to violate the agreements. There needs to be a new stage of sanctions, well-coordinated financial sanctions, technological sanctions, and Russia must pay its price for killing my people, for aggression in my country, and they must be held accountable for it', said the president.
