Ukrainians in Germany may lose benefits: 'work or fight'
German politicians are discussing the possibility of ending social benefits for Ukrainian conscript citizens who are in the country. The CSU party has expressed its dissatisfaction that more than 150,000 Ukrainians receive assistance in Germany totaling around 1.3 billion euros per year.
'It is necessary to stop providing social assistance to conscript-age Ukrainians. If such a large number of Ukrainians receive support, it is unacceptable. These people should work in Germany or serve in the military in Ukraine,' said Stefan Meyer, an expert from the party.
Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 300,000 Ukrainian men of conscription age have arrived in Germany, of which more than half receive social assistance. The total costs amount to over 1.3 billion euros per year. The Ukrainian embassy in Germany believes that the stay of many Ukrainians in the country is legal.
