Ukraine Strikes Russian Missile Range with New 'Flamingo' Weapon
Kapustin Yar Missile Range Targeted
According to ХВИЛЯ: In January, Ukrainian defense forces conducted a series of strikes on the Russian missile test site at Kapustin Yar in the Astrakhan region. The attacks, carried out using domestically-produced FP-5 'Flamingo' cruise missiles from Fire Point company, damaged several buildings and severely destroyed one hangar. This site has been used by Russia to launch 'Oreshnik' medium-range ballistic missiles against Ukraine, with the latest such attack targeting the outskirts of Lviv on January 8. The strike represents a significant extension of Ukraine's ability to reach strategic military targets deep within Russian-held territory.
Capabilities of the New Missile
The FP-5 'Flamingo' missile struck the range's infrastructure on the night of January 27-28. While the Russian 'Oreshnik' missile travels at speeds of approximately 13,000 km/h, the Ukrainian 'Flamingo' has a maximum speed of up to 950 km/h. Its stated operational range exceeds 3,000 km, and it carries a warhead weighing 1,150 kg. The missile's composite body enhances its performance, and its developer is working on versions with different types of warheads.
"Long-range weapons of Ukrainian manufacture were used to hit the targets," noted the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
This development underscores Ukraine's growing capacity for modern warfare and its use of advanced technology in military operations. The attack on Kapustin Yar signals an intensification of Ukrainian military action aimed at degrading the threat from Russian missile systems used to bombard Ukrainian territory. The deployment of the new FP-5 'Flamingo' missiles demonstrates progress in defense technology, allowing Ukraine to respond more effectively to challenges in the war and potentially altering the strategic balance in the region.
