For the First Time, Ukrainian Forces Down Russia’s Advanced Sokol-I Drone
Ukrainian Military Shoots Down Russian Sokol-I Drone
According to Главком: Ukrainian troops have achieved a first by taking down Russia’s new Sokol-I drone, a system specifically designed to counter Ukrainian reconnaissance and strike UAVs. Pilots from the 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade named after Kostya Gordienko carried out the interception using the General Chernesh AIR interceptor. Only one month passed between the drone’s initial unveiling and its first destruction in combat.
Russian sources claim the Sokol-I can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h and operate at altitudes as high as 5,000 meters. Its body is made of foam, and its warhead can be equipped with either a remote detonation or a kinetic system. These features highlight the ongoing evolution of drone technology in warfare, with new threats demanding swift and effective countermeasures from Ukrainian forces.
Surge in Drone Imports to Ukraine
Meanwhile, Ukraine has seen a sharp rise in drone imports. Between January and May 2026, the country imported UAVs worth $1.01 billion-1.7 times more than the $597.66 million recorded during the same period in 2025. Drones accounted for 2.5% of Ukraine’s total goods imports in the first five months of 2026, up from 1.91% in the previous year.
Ukraine has also launched an open competitive tender to procure middle-strike attack drones and reconnaissance-strike systems. This move underscores a broader push to upgrade military technology and strengthen national defense capabilities.
The downing of the Russian Sokol-I drone by Ukrainian forces highlights advances in defense technology and the ability to respond to emerging threats.
At the same time, the increase in drone imports reflects Ukraine’s growing focus on modernizing its military arsenal. Procuring new UAVs and announcing a tender for strike drones point to a strategic effort to bolster defenses and improve the effectiveness of military operations in today’s combat environment.
As Ukraine continues to enhance its military capabilities, the recent downing of the Sokol-I drone underscores the importance of modern defense technology. In line with this effort, the country has initiated its first open tender for combat UAVs, aiming to procure advanced strike and reconnaissance systems. This strategic move is crucial for countering evolving threats in the ongoing conflict.
