Polish Club Lechia Gdańsk Appoints Ukrainian Coach Vladyslav Lupashko
Vladyslav Lupashko Takes the Helm
According to Главком: Lechia Gdańsk, a Polish football club, has named Ukrainian manager Vladyslav Lupashko as its new head coach on a three-year contract. This move comes after Lupashko had been without a job since January 1, 2023. Prior to that, he spent a year and a half in charge of Lviv's Karpaty and also coached Inhulets from Petrove. Lechia ended the previous season in 16th place in the Ekstraklasa, resulting in relegation after finishing three points behind the safety zone.
New Season and Challenges Ahead
The upcoming season will see Lechia competing in the First Division. The club has faced significant setbacks, including a five-point deduction due to financial issues. Before Lupashko's appointment, Lechia was also placed under a transfer ban, complicating preparations for the new campaign. Founded in 1945, the club has won the Polish Cup and the Polish Super Cup twice each. Its best Ekstraklasa finish is third place, achieved on two occasions, and it has participated in European competitions three times.
Lupashko, a native of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, began his playing career with Borysfen-2 from Boryspil and went on to play for clubs such as Kyiv's Obolon, Zirka from Kropyvnytskyi, and Inhulets. He transitioned into coaching at the age of 35. In June 2023, he became the interim manager of Inhulets, and ahead of the 2024/25 season, he took over Karpaty, leading them to a sixth-place finish in the Ukrainian Premier League.
Lechia also has a notable history in European tournaments, including:
- Elimination by Juventus in the 1983/84 European Cup Winners' Cup.
- A loss to Brøndby in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League.
- Defeating Akademija Pandev in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers before being knocked out by Rapid Vienna.
The club's most famous fan is the current President of Poland, Andrzej Duda.
Lupashko's appointment as Lechia's head coach reflects the club's ambition to rebuild its standing in Polish football after a disappointing season.
Given the financial constraints and transfer ban, Lupashko will focus on developing young players and adapting the team to new circumstances. A strong start in the First Division could be a crucial step toward Lechia's return to the top tier of Polish football.
The recent changes in the coaching staff of various clubs highlight the dynamic nature of the football landscape. For instance, the departure of Oleksiy Hutsulyak from Polissya has made him a free agent, reflecting the ongoing shifts that teams are navigating as they prepare for new challenges in the upcoming season.
