Ukrzaliznytsia Increases Tariffs by 38%: How It Will Affect Agricultural Product Exports
Increase in Transportation Tariffs and Its Consequences
The agricultural sector of Ukraine is facing new threats due to the increase in freight transportation tariffs by Ukrzaliznytsia, which may significantly impact the export of agricultural products. Starting from January 1, 2026, transportation tariffs will rise by 27%, and after six months, in July, they will increase by another 11%. Thus, the total increase in tariffs will amount to approximately 38%. This additional financial burden on producers will exceed $200 million per year.
Agrarians have already harvested about 80 million tons of grain and oilseeds. However, despite the significant harvest volume, the pace of exports has slowed down by about 6 million tons compared to last year. Denys Marchuk, a representative of agrarians, noted that
“Ukrzaliznytsia intends to substantially increase the cost of freight transportation.” - Denys Marchuk
He also emphasized that
“in conditions where the enemy is destroying port infrastructure, agrarians should not bear such a significant additional financial burden.” - Denys Marchuk
Impact on the Competitiveness of the Agricultural Sector
The increase in tariffs could significantly complicate the situation for the agricultural sector, which is already facing challenges due to export restrictions. The new policy of Ukrzaliznytsia could deliver an additional blow to producers who are already struggling to adapt to difficult business conditions.
These changes in tariffs could seriously affect the competitiveness of Ukrainian agricultural products in international markets. Given the existing difficulties related to export restrictions due to infrastructure destruction, agrarians may find themselves in an even more challenging situation. It is important that the relevant authorities and agricultural associations pay attention to these challenges and seek ways to support the sector in the face of new economic realities.
